Assignment 5 tool belt Theory
by Blake Olsen
For this assignment I will be using Talk typer to aid in my dictation. I will be making some changes to what was recorded in my speech but trying to leave as much of it off and it is possible to allow for me to see what I can create with this program. I am adding some punctuation at the end of sentences but trying not to change anything else.
Tool belt Theory suggests that students to have many different ways of expressing themselves and finding ways to remove barriers from student achievement. The metaphor of a tool belt is really interesting to me because it suggests that students need more than one way of doing something to be successful. In the same way that we don't ask someone to use one screwdriver to to work with all screws or one sought to do all sign projects we can't ask students to use only one way to complete an assignment.
While reflecting about to about tool belt theory I've been noticing different classrooms that I've been in as a teacher on call this past week. Annie's classrooms I see assignments that are not asking for an output of information but asking for and output in form. For example, I see an assignment about translating French words to English words but it is not an assignment about doing that it is an assignment about using a dictionary specifically because students are not allowed to use any other device. This assignment is very limited and also suggest a 20th century mentality where a French-English dictionary was useful in the 21st century with Google translate and other such devices it is less important to have a French-English dictionary.
The tool belt that I am creating for a student who is in the seventh grade who is low in Reading , low in written output, and displays low motivation. The student will have a number of different methods while reading. For example:
an iPad or other tablet
Kurzweil 3000
reading with a partner
reading aloud as a class
Wiktionary to help with understanding words
Google Dictionary to easily check on the meaning of a word
readability Redux for Less distraction while reading on internet
read and write for Google Chrome to help read websites
To aid with written output the student will have access to:
talk typer.com
mind mapping software like mindmup or Kurzweil 3000
alternative options for output like spoken, video (using a tablet or phone), or comic form (using a program like Comic Creator)
Prezi for projects and presentations
to help with low motivation:
offer student a variety of places to work
allow music to be used as a work-aid.
Foster Partnerships with stronger students
By giving more options and freedom this student should feel more engaged with their assignments. While this is not an exhaustive list, it will get the students started by giving them many options and ways to own their work.
